A Study on the levels of Red Cell Folate in Pre-School Children

Abstract
The present study was carried out to establish the levels of red cell folate as a better basic data to appraise the untritional stational status of folic acid in normal infants and children (1-7 ages). Blood sample was collected from 10 healthy infants and 60 children who visited or were admitted to the Severence hospital, Yonsei university college of Medicine from Aug. 1975 to Apr. 1976. The folate assay was done with modified Cooperman¢¥s method, using Lactobacillus casei ATCC 7469. The results obtained were as following. 1. In infant, the level of red cell folate was 474.8¡¾94.2ng/ml with range 160.2-1091. 2ng/ml. 2. In children, the level of red cell folate was 252.3?12.3ng/ml with range 91.0-620. 3ng/ml. 3. The level of red cell folate in infants was significantly higher than that in children and adults (P 0.005) 4. There were no significant difference on the sex of pre-school children. As the results of the above, the level of red cell folate was considered along with age in indicating the nutritional status of folic acid in normal infants and children. It was suggested that the number of subjects was inadequate in this study, and in future study the more subjects should be measured to get the better criterion of red cell folate for pre-school children.
